Conserve Water in Landscapes

Landscaping Tips

Using native drought-resistant plants is an excellent way to reduce water use and lower your utility bill. Incorporate xeriscaping and follow these basic principles to conserve water landscaping:
  • Planning and design – design your lawn and beds to prevent water runoff
  • Soil analysis – mix clay soil and mulch in with your beds to prevent water from evaporating as quickly
  • Plant selection – use native plants that do not require as much water
  • Efficient irrigation – check for leaks; water during the cool parts of the day; do not over water
  • Use of mulches – mulches prevent moisture in the soil from being evaporated as quickly and can add natural nutrients to the soil
  • Appropriate maintenance – maintenance will keep your lawn looking great and keep weeds from stealing water and nutrients from the plants you want

Xeriscape Tips

One of the best long-term conservation measures is to plant water-efficient landscaping, called Xeriscape. Water-efficient landscapes need not be cactus and rock gardens. These can be green, cool landscapes full of beautiful plants. A green, Texas-style landscape can be achieved while still conserving water.
