SHOT FIRED AT POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDING TO MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS

Segroves

SEAGOVILLE, TX-    On the morning of 05/15/2023, family members of a Seagoville resident, RONALD DALE SEGROVES JR, 42, contacted Seagoville Police Department with concerns of SEGROVES exhibiting violent and aggressive behaviors.  It was reported that earlier that morning, SEGROVES walked outside and threw a glass beer bottle through a neighbor’s window without any provocation whatsoever and he seemed very agitated.

The family expressed a belief that SEGROVES’ behavior was due to a recent and sharp decline in his mental health. Seagoville Police helped put the family in contact with a social worker who provides services through the Seagoville Police Department.   After consultation, it was believed that SEGROVES could be experiencing a mental health crisis.  The determination was made to respond to the residence with the social worker to perform a welfare check.

Uniformed Seagoville Police Officers, accompanied by a civilian social worker, drove to SEGROVES’ location which was inside a mobile home community in the 300 block of Modene Street: Creekside Estates.

Two uniformed officers approached the front door of the residence and briefly encountered SEGROVES.  He was standing inside the home behind a storm door looking out.  SEGROVES quickly closed and locked the door of the residence after noticing the presence of the two officers.  The two uniformed officers retreated and were standing on the front walkway of the home just off the elevated front porch. He could be heard shouting from inside the residence.

During this brief time, SEGROVES retrieved a bolt-action scoped hunting rifle that was inside the home.   From a front window of the home, SEGROVES fired one shot from this rifle directly at the two uniformed police officers.   Neither officer was struck by this fired round.  Both officers were able to retreat to cover. No officers returned gunfire.

Seagoville Police Officers quickly established a perimeter around this mobile home.  Upon request, several area law enforcement agencies quickly responded to the scene.

Specialized tactical response teams responded to the scene to include crisis negotiators.   Negotiation efforts with SEGROVES to encourage him to surrender were unsuccessful.   Tactical operations were escalated, and SEGROVES was taken into custody unharmed at around 1:45 PM.

RONALD SEGROVES was subsequently arrested and will face two charges of Aggravated Assault against a Public Servant.
